This was a mistake.
Eve stared at herself in the mirror and attempted to fix her eyeliner for the third time this evening. It was the only thing keeping her mind away from the fact she was going to her first high school party. Ever.
Hailey mentioned there would be a lot of guests: friends, neighbors, people Eve had never met before. Eve didn't even know Sage and Liam had friends outside herself and Hailey. It wasn't as if they were particularly affectionate to anyone else in school.
Lucky me, I guess, she thought, and tried to quell the spike of anxiety that twisted in her stomach.
Was she dressed properly? Eve had no idea what other teens wore for parties outside of school dances; all her fashion knowledge came from storefront magazines and brief glimpses in the mall. She tugged at her beige sweater and tucked it into her long brown skirt. Her rumpled socks and shoes were pale and neutral, the only change of color coming from the tiny cross necklace at her collarbone. She was better prepared for a study session at the library than for a den of raging teenagers.
But it was too late to change it now. She heard the knock at the door and rushed downstairs, tucking Hailey's gifted scarf in her pocket. Eve checked once more that Nan was asleep before she slipped out into the night.
Hailey waited on the front porch, somehow more woman than girl. Hailey wore a tight orange crop top, a black bomber jacket, and some denim shorts that had clearly been longer before a pair of scissors tore them up. Black fishnets stretched down her legs into a pair of sneakers and a black choker clung to her neck.
A chill blew in, a nasty reminder of the late November season. Eve huddled in her sweater. How was Hailey not freezing to death?
"Ready to go?" Hailey chirped, a bright smile on her face. Eve considered excusing herself back upstairs to change, but what was there to change into? This was the most stylish outfit she had.
God, she was pathetic.
"Sure," Eve said with a smile that was more of a grimace. She locked the front door behind her, grateful that Mr. Stone had offered to keep an eye on the house in case Nan woke up in the middle of the night, and the girls padded down the wooden stairs.
Eve expected some admonishment for her attire, but nothing came. Hailey eagerly looped arms with her timid friend and led her on the path to Sage's home. Eve was glad Hailey had offered to take her becauseâfrom Sage's instructionsâEve had no clue where to go.
Through the cemetery and down the steps, Sage had said. It was the shadiest set of instructions Eve had ever received. Yet, the image of Sage and Liam living inside of some giant Gothic mansion in the middle of a graveyard made perfect sense to her.
The wide stone fence of the cemetery stood out between the trees, connecting to the side of the church and stretching back through the forest.
